We have often heard people use the words stroke, cardiac arrest and heart attack interchangeably. These all are different and we would get to know each of that one by one.
Let’s define it in brief:
Stroke: It’s also known as a brain attack, occurs due to the burst of the blood vessel in the brain.
Heart attack: This is basically a circulation problem. This occurs when blood flow to the heart is blocked.
Cardiac arrest: This is a case of an electrical problem. This occurs when the heart malfunctions and stops beating unexpectedly.
A stroke occurs due to the interruption or reduction of blood supply in your brain, depriving the brain tissues of oxygen and nutrients. As result brain tissues begin to die. It is a medical emergency and early action can minimize brain damage and potential complications. That’s why prompt treatment is needed in this situation. Strokes can be prevented and treated.
Some of the signs and symptoms of having strokes are as follows-
- Sudden trouble with speaking and understanding
- Paralysis or numbness of the leg, arm or face
- A sudden and severe headache which may be accompanied by dizziness and vomiting
- The trouble with walking and seeing
If you see this kind of syndromes, you should think “FAST”-
Face- Immediately ask that person to smile and check whether one side of the face is drooped or not.
Arms- Immediately ask that person to raise both the arms and check whether one arm of that person is unable to raise up or it drifts downward.
Speech- Immediately ask that person to repeat a phrase and check his or her speech.
Time- Call 911 immediately if you observe any of the above signs.
A heart attack is a circulation problem and it occurs when a coronary artery becomes narrow or blocked so that blood flow is severely restricted. A coronary artery is basically an artery that circulates blood to the heart muscle.
Blockage occurs if a blood clot stops blood flow in a coronary artery. Blood circulation may also hamper due to the formation of too much cholesterol plaque in the artery.
Some people may have some warning signs for a heart attack while others show no sign. Some of the symptoms are as follows:
- Upper body pain
- Chest pain
- Trouble in breathing
It is a serious medical emergency and needs immediate attention if you or someone you know is experiencing symptoms that could signal a heart attack.
Cardiac arrest is an electrical problem, occurs when the heart malfunctions and stops beating unexpectedly. This causes an irregular heartbeat. As a result heart’s pumping action disrupt and it cannot pump blood to the brain, lungs and other organs. Within a second the person becomes unresponsive, is not breathing, or is only gasping. Death occurs if that person doesn’t receive treatment within a minute.
All strokes and heart attacks are preventive and that’s why it’s best advised to go for regular annual health check-up to keep yourselves in good health. Why are you waiting?
